I think it has changed over time. I remember when I first started working in the late 90’s, people would ask if I was a mechanic or why would a girl be doing that? But now, people ask questions like what does that involve and do I get to travel much with that? I think the perception that engineering is only for men is pretty much gone, although I think not so many girls and young women think of it as a career choice compared to boys/young men.

I think people are really interested, especially people who don’t really know what engineers do. So I tell the what I do and they keep asking me questions- so I always think that it must be because they find what I do interesting anyway!

I suppose I dont say I am an engineer. I tend to say what I am working on. Engineering is so broad you need to be more specific when telling someone

Usually they like it when I tell them I’m working with satellites. Reactions very much depends on the person asking and what they have (or are) doing themselves. In general, I get a positive reaction.

What usually happens when I say exactly what engineering I do is that I get asked sarcastically “Oh are an Astronaut then?” I guess people are just joking but I had the same reaction when I told people I was studying Aircraft Systems, they thought I was going to be a Pilot! I find that generally people are interested once I explain a bit further. I do tend to sometimes go into too much detail when I’m explaining and lose them along the way. It’s something I would like to personally work on so that it doesn’t happen in the future and I hope it hasn’t happened here :).
